This isnt really a technical type of question. But non the less...here it is. Would it be possilbe to pull the oil pan without taking the engine out on a 84 Caprice? Ive tried this before on some cars, and it doesnt work too great...but the Caprice seems to have a fair amount of room between the pan and crossmember. It needs a new oil pump, and I was thinking of trying to change it with the engine in...rather then pulling everything off and take the engine out (it has a/c, heat, smog stuff...long story short its a lot of shit to have to take off). I was going to just take off the engine mount bolts and trans crossmember out and try to pick the engine up a few inches enuff to pull the pan on it. Anybody know if it can be done on this type car?
If you read the tag-board you can see I said I was going to do this today. But I got a little busy. Had to put a bumper on my grandpa's truck, clean the building out some, and almost got a 2" thick 3ft long rod stuck thru my leg (long story).

I'm pretty sure it can be done, just take out the motor mount bolts out and loosen the tranny mount (my have to disconnect the shift linkage too) and take off the distributer cap and jack 'er up. And if it don't work you'll be that much closer to taken the whole mess out.

True.
Well maybe the new pump will fix the problem. I still say the pump wasnt causing the problems the car was having...but oh well. Other people kept telling me that it was the problem, so I changed it. If the problem comes back, then I guess I can prove them wrong. lol

I am quite sure the oil pan can be removed without removing the engine on your car. At the most you may have to lift the engine an inch or so. Remember that if you have to lift the engine to remove the distributor cap and throttle linkage, seen lots broken and bent when this is not done.
What is the problem you are having, it is a lot of work and messy to replace the oil pump if that is not your problem.'

The problem its having is that it keeps blowing gaskets out of the oil filter. Everybody tells me its the oil pump, and that the pressure release valve isnt working. Only reason I say that isnt the case, is because it takes months and months before it does it sometimes. If the pump was building up too much pressure it would blow it off in no time each time you ran it right? Instead of running for months. I changed it and nothing happened yet...but we will see.
The guy that owned it said sometimes it would blow the oil filter "gasket" (rubber that goes on top of the filter) as soon as you put it on and started it up. He said other times he would change it and the car would run for 3-4 months and have no problem...then all of a sudden blow the rubber.

It does sound like the relief valve is sticking. The easiest way to check this is to connect an oil pressure gauge to monitor the pressure. If the pressure is too high you know that the fix is to replace the pump, high oil pressure calso puts a lot of stress on the dist drive gear, the cam, etc and uses a LOT of HP.
