sorry to be bombarding u guys with all these questions but for the nova guys do u kno if hard tops and vinyl tops r basicly the same except the vinyl tops have the vinyl cover. cuz i would really like to get rid of my vinyl top and fix my rust problem and then just put some flat black on it to seal it.

lol, thats the trunk lid.anyway, what is a 1" drop leaf spring? I have some 4" shackles under my nova but I'm not ure they would be legal where you live. The vinyal top is just that, a peice of vinyal glued to the roof of the car, just rip it off and sand all the glue off and spray some primer(theres no telling what kinda rust is under it though). Then remove the moldling on the 1/4 panel and thats it.

Hey, Just checked this discussion out. I have a few things for the nova guy to think about though. One getting the "truck springs" is the better option for a couple of reasons but, it will make the ride rougher. As for the "re-arched springs" well you pretty much have to start with new springs most places I called will not bother with old ones, they would have to keep redoing it and It would just make them weaker. Shackles are a temp. fix for the same reason, it will just sag again so why spend to money? As for your trany swap, while you can buy the factory stuff new from places like Year One. But, a new "race preped" trany would be cheap and still be able to handle the job. And why waste your time with a four speed? why not a six-speed? O'well best of luck. Later

The "truck" springs would be best, but like k4 said..it would make the ride rougher. I havnt bought any rear leaf springs for a nova, so I dont know what kind of prices they run. If you need a quick fix till you get something worked out..run to the parts store and get a $15 set of shackles. You said something about drag? 4 speed would be a good choice for now..but if your going to go mostly drag car later down the road...a powerglide automatic would be a good choice. The vinyl top isnt a problem to take off...its just glued on top of the roof. But it may be rusted underneath (like 73nova said). Ive taken some off of cars in the past...and looked like surface rust under it...then I start to sand..and put a little pressure on it, and knock a hole thru it. Yours could be in perfect shape underneath..just be carefull.

lol, mine already has a few holes in the top, the strange thing is, my last nova had a vinyal top and the roof was in perfect shape.

well i kno that under the vinyl towards the back of the car on the sides, like behind the read side windows that theres gonna be some rust cuz its like bubbleing. its still pretty strong but i dont wanna take it off to check it out and then find out that its really really bad. its too much money to put a new one on and they look better without them.im at the point where i need and want to do stuff on my car but i cant bcuz if its somethin i cant fix im stuck w/o a car

As long as its black, no white vinyl tops man, I dont think they look very good. Black, or maybe tan, but black looks the best.

They look OK on the 68-74 Nova's..but id rather have one without a vinyl top. I dont like them for the main fact that they cause rust to build up under it.
