Is it surface rust or rusted thru? If its surface rust, just sand, primer, and repaint. If its rusted thru, either fill it in with bondo or fiberglass.....be best to put metal back in its place tho.

Rust bubbles are an easy fix, hammer the damn bubble back in and put fiberglass where it is needed.( you can use bondo but I dont use it in an area any bigger than a half dollar)

i havent actually seen what the rust looks like, i can just see the bubbling and feel it thru the vinyl top. thats the only place im worried about cuz i hvae rust in the other places where u mostly see it like behind each wheel and i kno how to fix that no problem. its just on the top where im worried

Hey, Hope your luck is better then mine, I had the same thing thought I could hold off for a while. I started to notice rust in the trunk, removed the vinyl and there's a four inch hole under it. It's a really bad spot cause to fix it right I need a whole 1/4 panel, it's the only way to get new metal in that spot.O' and now I need a new trunk pan as well as the peice over the rear end, which I can't find anywhere. It's funny cause if you look hard enough you could build almost a whole "new" car from after market pieces only the roof metal, that rear end cover pieces and a few other minor ones are unavailable.
I haven't finished mine yet , cause a 1/4 panel is almost $1000.00 for a GM NOS panel. I'm lucky in the fact that I don't have to drive my Chevelle, it's basically a "Toy" but, I will get it done.

Don't scare the man, on a Nova, any rust thats there should be able to be fixed without haveing to replace the whole 1/4 panel.

I remember when i messed my 1/4 panel up. I was showing off at my uncle's, and when I hit 2nd gear, I snapped my lugs off my rear wheel. Tire came off, and the body slammed down on the tire. (Tire was under the 1/4 panel). Suprisingly it wasnt that bad...hammered the part inside the wheel well back flat..and it almost didnt even need any bondo.
Actually thats the only bondo in the whole car...and that isnt alot.

I've never had that happen (knock on wood) But I've seen it and it's funny. Okay before some one blows a gasket, the car was a Mazda with a "rotory" engine. Guy popped the clutch at like 10,000 rpms, snapped all eight back lugs. Now the was music to my ears, hearing the back end slam the road like that!! ;D I didn't mean to scare anyone . I live in Wisconsin, Aka salty winter hell. They salt more then they plow a round here. Last snow fall was yesterday and the salt trucks where rolling long before the snow stopped and the plows came out. That's part of the reason for the rust, it's more of the lack of care given to the top. I had the Buick with a newer top and they left the paperwork in the car, basically it said to treat the vinyl every other month.O'well you car sounds like it'll be great. Later

;D Yeah they do that here too. I don't worry so much about the sand, unless they use gravel (sometimes they do just to be picks!). Little rocks hitting a cold windshield, get the idea?
I hope you guys are removing all to rust before bondoing the hell out of your cars. It looks really bad in a couple of months or years if you're lucky if ya don't. I'm going with the whole panel because of lack of a repair panel or even a formed piece for where my rust is. And it would be really hard to bend a piece of sheet metal to look right, too many different bends.
I haven't removed the vinyl yet anyone know of a "glue remover" that would work better then playing with a sander and putty knife? I've never done this before cause I tend to stay away from vinyl tops, but I really liked this car and it took forever to talk the guy out of it. Later

I try to stay away from bondo as much as i can, the biggest spot of bondo i have ever used was about 1"x1" circle. The last vinyl top i took off the vinyl was lifting from the glue so it came off easy and the glue came off with acetone and took it down to the primer not bare metal. I dont know if the acetone will work thru a peice of vinyl though.
