Ok, lets talk 350
ive put a expiration date on the 305 already so now i need to get something to replace it. This is when u come tell me where to get it and what to get.
I think itll be best to go with a shortblock and then use lots of the things off the 305.
the main things im talkin about right now are:
block cam crank heads (how do i find out if the ones on the 305 will do) pistons rods rockers (how do i find out if the ones on the 305 will do) lifters (how do i find out if the ones on the 305 will do) carb (how do i find out if the ones on the 305 will do)
Im pretty serious about it and i figured that u guys would probably be my best shot against buying something worthles and ending up with a lawn ornament. so...
I dont want the engine to be SUPER i was hoping for 275 HP atleast.
so if u could hook me up with some basic info on what parts to get how to get them and a total for how much this wood cost, that would be awsome.
and tell me if theres anything that i might be able to use off of the 305.

The heads and stuff off the 305 will work on the 350. But it will kill the power. If you can find a stock 350 (with all stock parts) and have headers, and a 600 (no bigger if its stock) cfm carb...you will have 275 hp ATLEAST. 350 Block with most the 305 parts will come up short of 275hp.
I dont know how much cars are around where you live. But around here they are always vehicles (cars & trucks) That are rusted, need paint, or just look rough, but have a really good running engine. My grandpa has bought many cars in the past for under $800 just to get the motor out of them.
Find one that looks bad, but has a good engine.

The crank and rods will work from the 305 and the rockers and carb but I would replace the lifters if you are going with a new cam, the cam out of the 305 would work in a 350 but if it's the original cam DONT USE IT the stock 305 cams SUCK.

They arent original, they were just replaced before i bought the car along with the lifters.
So you think that i should start looking around for heaps of schit for low prices based on what engines are in them?
theres el caminos around here like crazy, they are almost as popular as hondas where i live, i bet i could come up with a schitty el camino in a couple days, but how do i kno if whats in it is worth keeping?
ive been talkin and reasearchin a lot, but i dont kno where to start.
now all i need is the parts that are in there now i can use, and then some hints on where to start lookin for a piecer.

err god does love me after all.
today on the way over to my moms house i noticed a older car that used to be baby blue but was now a lime green/rust red color. So i stopped by to check it out and i think i might have hit the jackpot.
its a 77 malibu, and its got everything it should have in it. I didnt have time to completely check it out but its got a piece of paper in the window:
1977 Malibu Chevelle 350 auto trans 4 carb new tires new brakes
and after wrenching off the lid to the beast i did see a sb, 350 ionno and the # is gonna be a pain to get 2. but its perfect for what im looking for ( counting on it running) im pretty sure the car starts so next time im out there im gonna have em start it, and then im gonna check for the casting #.
the tires are actually pretty nice tho, and i think i kno someone lookin for a tranny so that takes some off the cost.
its posted at $500 but Jim said hes seen it everyday hes gone out to my house to pick me up and it hasnt moved so i might be able to get it for even less since its been sitting there for so long.

" but how do i kno if whats in it is worth keeping?"
Thats a hard question. Some engines will run really good for a few months...then die all of a sudden. Some people will be honest and tell you all about the car's past. Some will lie just to sell the car.
About the only way to tell if the engine is any good at all. First off hear it run, thats the main part. Listen for any rattles or knocks. Check to see if it starts smoking. Its usually best if they person lets you drive it down the road and back. Because some cars wont start acting up, till they get warm. Id check the dipstick to see how much oil it has in it...and check for any metal flakes or anything that may show sign of a worn out engine. If the oil is jet black (really really dark) it doesnt mean th eninge is bad..but it does mean it hasnt had a oil change in a good while.
And if you do get a chance to drive a car that you are looking at. Dont get out there and dog it around...but see if the engine has some power. Or if its a weak, high milage worn out engine.

If it doesnt knock or anything chances are that it's a good engine to start with, depending on how many miles are on it, you could just replace gaskets, rebuild the heads and just tune up stuff like that, thats what I did with the 307 in my nova with 80,000 miles. If you use the cam out of your 305, keep the lifters in order and put them back in the same lifter bores they came out of.
