This one is for you... Guy had to move all his junked cars because people complained about them degrading their property value...so he asked if we could let him bring it here. Since he didnt want to get rid of it. Has a 302 instead of the 390 in yours.

The guy still owns it....has for years and years. He has the heads, intake, carb, distributor and all off the engine. He probally still has those and could get it running. Dont know what he plans on doing with it, car looks nice inside and out. Driver side door panel is off...but in the back seat. Passenger side door handle is gone.

I could take a rear shot. Are you sure your's is lighter? Oddly enough alot of verts are heavier then hard tops. Mostly because alot of the verts have more reinforcement on the body.

Yup. The covertable Camaros were heavier than the hardtops, keep in mind it was a unibody car to start with so they had to do something to strenghten it a bit.

Thats the reason why when people chop the tops of cars they have to tack weld braces across before cutting the top. The roof of the car helps keep the body aligned. When you cut the top off the body can move in or out and mess you up. Same goes for a convertible...without the top it doesnt have that extra support....so they have to reinforce the body panels. More metal = more weight.

When I got rid of my old Nova, I couldn't find a trailer so I cut up the shell and took it peice by peice to the junkyard. I started off by torching the A-pillars and yes that roof does keep things together, I wasn't expecting it to move at all but there was quite a lot of stress right there.

Yep. You would think the body would be able to hold itself...but without that roof it will flex a good bit.
While on the subject....T-top cars weight just as much if not more then hardtops too dont they? The 85 Iroc I used to have weighed more then a non T-top camaro I think....dunno too long ago to remember.

I'm not sure. I don't see what they could have done to make them heavier, how much do the T-top panels weigh?

chevys and ford are 2 dif things.... and as for colapsing the windshield in any car is 85% of the roofs structure

As far as the T tops go...they are fairly heavy. When I mean heavy, I mean that they would probally weight more then the normal piece of metal that would go in its place. Plus they have a good bit of reinforcement in the middle and the rest of the roof. Ive drug a mid 70's t top camaro on its top over a ditch and down a rough as "road" (junkyard car...totalled to start with). The roof never shifted a fraction of an inch out of shape. All it did was scrap up the paint and put a few dents in the metal that could have been popped out. Ive also flipped a 77 Camaro with a normal roof and it completely caved in. It suprised me it bent up so bad just by barely rolling it over...Id hate to see one that flipped in a wreck. I mean this one's front of the roof was all screwed up. where the top of the windsheild met the roof was about 2 inchs from the dash.
The windshield helps...but I dont think its 85%. The A pillar holds the weight....the windshield mostly helps with that, and supports the A pillars by not allowing them to shift from side to side.

yes its around that percentage. the roof area is weak without the window in it... after all i only have a brother that does windshield repairs

Or in the case of Fords, that percentage is higher....considering the glass is the strongest part of the vehicle ;D
